How Bad Incentives Led to Crypto-Mining Malware, and What to Do about It

Posted on in Presentations

Crypto mining came about because human beings are terrible at creating incentives. This presentation will discuss economic and systems principles about incentives, trace the rise of crypto-mining malware to early incentive design for public blockchain, and consider the pros and cons of alternative incentive models that could mitigate the popularity of crypto-mining malware in the future.

Learning Objectives:
1: Understand how blockchain incentives led to crypto-mining malware.
2: Learn how to think about incentives and “side effects.”
3: Consider alternative incentive plans for blockchain participation.

Pre-Requisites:
Attendees should have a basic understanding of how blockchain works and understand what crypto mining and crypto-mining malware are (and what they do).
