Richard Hughes founded and co-led the Quantum Communications team at Los Alamos National Lab. He has a B.Sc. in mathematical physics and Ph.D. in theoretical elementary particle physics both from the University of Liverpool and held research positions at Oxford University, California Institute of Technology and CERN. Hughes is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, has led the US government’s Quantum Information Science and Technology Roadmap and has authored over 160 scientific papers on elementary particle physics, quantum field theory, quantum cryptography and quantum computation.
