Last week I enjoyed some family time at the beach and got lots of reading done, which for me is such a great pastime. Because I like to read an actual book while also listening to an audiobook, I read The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun and listened to Somebody’s Daughter by Ashley C. Ford (which was a heavy memoir). Then, I enjoyed a few laughs via Yes Please by Amy Poehler and started listening to Our Next Reality, by Alvin Wang Graylin and Louis B. Rosenberg (side note: Graylin is a panelist on an upcoming RSAC 365 webcast). This one is incredibly thought-provoking as it imagines all the ways AI and the metaverse will impact our world.
In the midst of all this reading, the world suffered two massive outages: the global outage on July 19 resulting from a CrowdStrike update to its Falcon platform and this week’s Microsoft Azure Outage resulting from a DDoS attack. As I think about the future Graylin and Rosenberg envision, I am also tentative about the pace at which technology is changing our world.
According to Yahoo! Finance, I’m not alone in having concerns that the rapid pace of technological changes, “poses a significant challenge for creating a resilient technology infrastructure,” as Ollie Whitehouse, Chief Technology Officer for the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) suggested. As a result of these stories, we’re engaging in more conversations about cybersecurity resilience.
“This event has underscored the need for a resilient approach to technology development and deployment, highlighting how critical it is to adhere to basic engineering and quality assurance (QA) principles,” wrote Tony Bradley, Senior Contributor, Forbes.
