Day 3 Recap: Keynote Highlights: Myth Busting, the Mob, Money Ball, and More

Posted on by RSAC Editorial Team

How’s everyone feeling? We’ve just completed day three of the Conference, leaving one more day to squeeze in more in-depth and thought-provoking discussions about cybersecurity and the state of the industry. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s look back at what took place today...

Eleven keynotes took place today, delivering a dynamic mix of strategy, storytelling, and forward-looking security insights. The day opened with Mean Time to Adapt, where Pat Opet urged organizations to rethink how they approach resilience in the face of AI-driven threats and increasingly fragile software and infrastructure supply chains.

During this session, we also presented the first RSAC Frontier Award to Dr. Maria Spiropulu, a particle physicist and the Shang-Yi Ch’en Professor of Physics at the California Institute of Technology. She was recognized for her contributions to disruptive technologies with the potential to reshape security, privacy, and digital trust.

Global perspectives took center stage in Cyber Threats & National Strategies: A Global Perspective, as senior cyber leaders from allied nations shared how governments are responding to a rapidly evolving threat landscape. The conversation underscored the importance of coordinated international efforts to address shared risks and strengthen collective defenses.

In a shift from policy to practice, Adam Savage on Maker’s Mindset: Life Is What You Make It brought an engaging and practical lens to the stage. The MythBusters host emphasized the value of breaking down complex problems, embracing iteration, and fostering collaboration, offering cybersecurity professionals a fresh way to approach challenges and drive progress.

A standout moment of the day came with From Infiltration to Disruption: Taking on the Russian Cyber Mob, where reporter Brian Krebs industry insider Lawrence Baldwin walked attendees through the real-world takedown of the JabberZeus cybercrime group. Their firsthand account offered rare insight into the evolution of organized cybercrime.

Later, security technologist Bruce Schneier took a step back to examine the bigger picture in Integrous System Design, making the case that integrity is emerging as the defining challenge in modern cybersecurity. His session explored the subtle and complex questions organizations must address as systems become more interconnected and more critical to everyday life.

Closing out the day, Fireside Chat with Acclaimed Author Michael Lewis offered a compelling discussion on the power of storytelling to uncover hidden truths and shape decision-making. The author of bestsellers like Money Ball and The Big Short shared how narrative can make complex systems more understandable—an idea that resonated strongly in the context of cybersecurity and leadership.

Thursday: Closing Day Snapshot
