John Bumgarner is the Chief Technical Officer of the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, an independent, nonprofit research institute that investigates the strategic and economic consequences of cyberattacks. Recognized as one of the world’s top hackers, he has done extensive research into the kinds of damage cyberattacks could do to critical infrastructures, led US-CCU investigations of past cyber-conflicts, such as the campaign against Georgia, and been one of the world’s leading analysts of advanced malware, such as Stuxnet. Before joining the US-CCU, he spent 18 years in Special Operations and intelligence, often on loan to whatever agencies most needed his special skills. He has extensive operational, field experience in weapons systems and offensive cyberattacks.
