Director of Distance Learning, Royal Holloway University of London
Colin Walter studied algebraic number theory at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was awarded his doctorate in 1976. He taught various aspects of computing for a number of years at UMIST, Manchester, during which time he designed a systolic modular multiplier which is widely used in cryptographic chips for SSL servers. Hardware consultancy on an RSA chip for Plessey-Crypto led into work on side channel analysis for NatWest in connection with the Mondex purse, and resulted in a number of publications which included improved versions of Montgomery modular multiplication and some novel exponentiation algorithms. He worked for the certificate authority Comodo for several years, during which time he chaired a work group of the Trusted Computing Group. He is now director of distance learning with the ISG at Royal Holloway.
