Quick Look: Ring, Ring: The Rise of Ubiquitous Consumer Surveillance Systems

Consumer surveillance systems (CSS) comprise privately owned IoT cameras that record persons entering/passing by the device owner’s property in a cloud. When networked in neighborhoods CSS creates a massive private surveillance system accessible by police upsetting traditional notions of government surveillance and privacy. This session will explore the technical, social and legal issues raised by CSS.

Learning Objectives:
1: Learn how networks of IoT doorbell cameras create private consumer surveillance networks.
2: Understand how crowd-sourced video data upends traditional notions of privacy.
3: Explore the social, legal and ethical issues of consumer surveillance networks.
