Crypto mining came about because human beings are terrible at creating incentives. This presentation will discuss economic and systems principles about incentives, trace the rise of crypto-mining malware to early incentive design for public blockchain, and consider the pros and cons of alternative incentive models that could mitigate the popularity of crypto-mining malware in the future.
Learning Objectives: 1: Understand how blockchain incentives led to crypto-mining malware. 2: Learn how to think about incentives and “side effects.” 3: Consider alternative incentive plans for blockchain participation.
Pre-Requisites: Attendees should have a basic understanding of how blockchain works and understand what crypto mining and crypto-mining malware are (and what they do).
