Federated authentication requests and responses are historically stateless, but new standards work challenges that pattern. Communication of inter-domain hints about previous sessions or identifiers, create potentially rich new types of contextual data to be evaluated by risk engines. Standards are also evolving around the use of HTML storage, to help users send hints of their own.
