Joseph Burton concentrates his practice in complex civil, criminal and appellate litigation, and E-Discovery counseling. Burton is a nationally recognized expert in Information Security Law. His practice includes civil and criminal litigation with an emphasis on cybercrime and cyber security. He was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of California where he handled the first prosecution in the nation for criminal copyright infringement of computer code. As defense counsel, he represented one of the targets of the first criminal investigation into the export, by computer, of cryptography programs. He also successfully defended Elcomsoft Co. in a landmark case involving the first criminal prosecution of a software company under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
