Principal Scientist, Hewlett-Packard
Dr. Alan Karp is a Principal Scientist at HP Labs where he works on usable security and access control for the Services Oriented Architecture. Karp leads the Virus Safe Computing Initiative, a group that does work demonstrating that it is possible to improve usability by adding security. He designed the security architecture for the first version of HP's e-speak product and later served as Chief Scientist of HP's E-speak Operation. Before joining HP, he spent 14 years at IBM doing large scale scientific computation. The holder of 62 patents, he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. in Physics and has a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Maryland.
